Frequently Asked Questions

Why are your adoption requirements more flexible than other rescues?

We believe good bird homes come in many forms. Instead of excluding people based on housing, experience, or lifestyle, we focus on education, preparation, and ongoing support. Our goal is to create successful, long-term placements—not just limit who gets the opportunity to adopt.

Do you adopt to first-time bird owners?

Yes—with guidance. We provide lessons, resources, and ongoing support to make sure new owners are set up for success. We’d rather teach someone to do things right than turn away a potentially great home.

Do you adopt to renters, RV owners, or people with non-traditional lifestyles?

Yes. Birds can thrive in a variety of environments when their needs are properly met. We work with adopters to ensure their setup, routine, and expectations are appropriate for the bird they’re adopting.

Why Isn’t this approach risky for the birds?

Actually, we’ve found the opposite. Our model focuses on:

  • Matching birds based on personality and lifestyle

  • Providing education before and after adoption

  • Offering continued support and guidance

This leads to more informed adopters and more stable homes.

Why are your adoption fees higher than some rescues?

Our fees reflect the care, time, and resources each bird receives, including:

  • Daily care and enrichment

  • Diet improvements

  • Socialization and training

  • Behavioral work and rehabilitation

  • Ongoing adopter support

We also intentionally use pricing as a way to ensure commitment, while keeping adoption more accessible than purchasing from a breeder.

Are you trying to make a profit?

No. We are a federally recognized nonprofit, and the majority of our funding currently comes out of pocket. Adoption fees help offset care costs but do not generate profit.

Why not charge less and adopt out more birds?

Lower fees can sometimes lead to impulsive adoptions. Our goal is long-term success, not just quick placements. We balance accessibility with commitment to give each bird the best chance at a permanent home.

What happens if an adoption doesn’t work out?

We will always work with adopters to find a better match. While adoption fees are non-refundable, we allow adopters to meet other birds and continue the process with our support.

Do you offer foster-to-adopt options?

Yes! We strongly encourage fostering as a way to ensure a good fit. We even offer a discount for foster families who adopt their bird, because we’ve already seen that match succeed.

How do you match birds with adopters?

We focus heavily on:

  • Personality and temperament

  • Energy level and social needs

  • Lifestyle compatibility

  • Experience level (with support if needed)

We are very transparent about each bird so adopters know exactly what to expect.

Do you take in birds with behavioral issues?

Yes. Many birds come to us with challenges such as biting, screaming, or feather plucking. We work on:

  • Diet improvements

  • Enrichment and environment

  • Socialization and training

We also clearly communicate each bird’s needs so adopters are prepared.

Do you still help after I adopt?

Absolutely. We offer free check-ins, consultations, and continued guidance. Our goal is to support both the bird and the adopter long-term.

Does education really make a difference?

Yes. We’ve seen that informed adopters are significantly more confident, better prepared, and far more likely to keep their birds long-term.

Why don’t you have a single public facility?

We currently operate through private locations and foster homes, which allows us to:

  • Care for more birds

  • Provide individualized attention

  • Maintain flexibility in capacity

We do have long-term plans to expand into a larger aviary-style setup.

Why not follow the same model as other rescues?

Many adopters are turned away due to rigid criteria, even when they could provide excellent homes. We aim to bridge that gap by offering guidance and support instead of automatic disqualification.

It sounds like you just make it easier for anyone to get a bird—how do you ensure quality homes?

We don’t remove standards—we change how they’re applied.
Instead of relying only on background factors, we focus on:

  • Education and preparation

  • Honest conversations

  • Ongoing support

  • Thoughtful matching

This allows us to create responsible, informed adopters, not just filter based on assumptions.

What if someone sounds good during adoption but turns out to be a bad owner later?

That risk exists in every rescue model—no screening process can predict human behavior perfectly.

What we do differently is reduce that risk by:

  • Being extremely transparent about each bird’s needs and challenges

  • Preparing adopters through education and honest conversations

  • Offering ongoing support after adoption so problems don’t go unaddressed

We also maintain relationships with adopters and encourage them to reach out early if something isn’t working.

Our goal isn’t to pretend we can guarantee perfection—it’s to build a system where problems are caught early and solutions are accessible.
